Types of Makeup
Standard Halloween Makeup: liquid latex, liquid tooth
cover, black lipstick, creme makeup (good choices are black, brown,
white, blue, red, yellow and purple) can be sold together -- like water
color paints or separately in tubes. Fake skin packs. Found just about
everywhere in October and usually at low cost.
The only real problem is that you rarely get a real variety in colors
and the amount can be fairly small. I have found that it is usually
worth while to pick up extra supplies (especially liquid latex) just
AFTER Halloween. They want it out of the store and will usually reduce
the price to get it moving. Shop around for good deals on costumes too.
Ben Nye Makeup: I prefer these because the color range
is wider and they blend together more smoothly then other creme makeup
(like the standard Halloween creme). However they can be costly. They
can be found for sale at costume shops or online (link in the resources
section of this site). Due to cost, try to narrow down your colors based
on the effect you wish to do.
Recommended Colors/Effect: On my most recent trip to
the local costume shop I did a test to see what colors I'd like based
on the effect I wanted. I found the following:
Sallow Green -- sickly shadows
Death Purple -- bruising, blood vessels
Turquoise -- veins
Death Flesh -- gray pale skin
Porcelain -- pale skin
Concerning White: White is for clowns not vampires (unless
you're playing a vampire clown). Try a creme that is lighter then your
skin tone or just stick with your own skin color and save some money.
